New Deep-Dive Publication: Slow Pandemics

Medical progress and greater prosperity have helped us to not only live longer, but also stay healthy for an extended timespan. The downside of this ever greater convenience, however, is becoming apparent: The next pandemic will be characterised by lifestyle-related diseases that, unlike the Corona virus, are spreading slowly and without much media attention.

A growing number of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes or cancer result as effect of modern life with less exercise and more fast food. In addition, more mental illnesses due to pressure to perform, loneliness and the dependence on digital aids are part of the new normality. Not only older people are affected, but more and more young people as well. These "slow pandemics" arise in everyday life and cannot be treated by a hospital or a drug. They require a new healthcare system which puts everyday life at the center – including the involvement of all public and private actors shaping our environment and behavior.

In this context, healthy lifestyles open up new markets for prevention – given a new responsibility towards society, collaboration of all actors in a data-driven healthcare system, and the redefinition of quality of life.
